I'm taking a break from sports gaming today only because I find this so fascinating since all I hear from people who do not like baseball is that they think the games are too long.

However, the facts tell a different story. The average MLB Game is roughly 2 hours 50 minutes long while the average NFL game is around 3 hours 7 minutes long.

Furthermore, the action in an NFL game is constrained to as little as 12 minutes while in baseball the ball is almost always in play.

Of course, I must also say that using action and average times of games is a horrible way to compare sports. Soccer beats both baseball and football in both categories but I'm not a big fan of the sport at all.

My stance is simple, I love both sports. But I just found the facts interesting. The main point I'm making is simple: using time as an excuse for hating baseball is contradictory if you are defending football.

So what do you think? Do you use the length of games excuse for hating baseball? Do you find those excuses lame? Sound off!

Three more to go after this, the standings look like this today:

Standings
goallout13 - 2 points
kwrichardson, HechticSooner, bryan_05 - 1 point

So what about today's first question? You have until the afternoon to post a response...best 3 responses get a point. For this question, there is no one right answer...I'm looking for guys who know their stuff with this one. So basically, impress me with your baseball knowledge folks!

It is July 29 and you are in the midst of a playoff race. Unfortunately you just lost your ace pitcher for the rest of the year due to injury. Your ace was having a fantastic season, with an ERA at 2.88 with a record of 14-3, Cy Young Material. You have some options internally, but none of your players could possibly match what you lost. You are being offered a trade for a superstar pitcher but the price is incredibly steep and will cost you a big bat in your lineup. There is another pitcher out there that is solid and would be a better option than anyone internally, but he is also overpaid and has 3 years left on his contract, his asking price is rather low at this point. Assume there are no free agents who are going to help you in this exercise.

So what do you do? Maybe there is another option you could think of? This is a fun thought experiment, put your thinking caps on and impress me!

So here is the deal, we have a copy of MLB Front Office Manager sitting around and in order to figure out what to do with it, I came up with an idea. The smartest baseball mind out there should receive the game!

So what does this mean for you? It means you had better be checking OS throughout the day over the next week as I post questions in my blog. The first person to answer the question I post in an entry will earn a point. The user with the most points at the end of this week wins the game for free.

So with that, here is tonight's question:

Who led the worst division winner (by record) in the six division area in home runs? Give me the team and their record and the player and their number, position and name. Good luck!

I just want to send a shout out to all you OSers out there and wish you a Happy New Year!

I always put down 5 goals (or resolutions) for each year. I'm usually rather good at keeping them as well, so I'm going to put mine out in public so I can be held accountable on them!

  1. Produce A Film for a Film Festival - This one will happen, I'm already planning it. I'm going to use Storm Chasing and photography to make a short documentary over my hobby. It should be a lot of fun and should turn out really well.
  2. Win A Wiffle Ball Tournament or Six - I happen to play fast-pitch Wiffle Ball, which may sound strange to some...but I prefer it over playing slow-pitch softball. The team I play on is actually rather good, so I want to have a successful season this year. Not a bad goal right?
  3. See OS Continue to Grow Big-Time - We saw some amazing growth numbers in 2008 here at OS. I'm wanting to make 2009 just as memorable from that perspective.
  4. Get 1,000 Facebook Friends - This is silly I know...but I now have a new quest to get 1,000 facebook friends. I promise you my life isn't all that exciting, but you should look me up (Chris Sanner) and help me reach my goal of 1,000 friends. I'd love to see some of the OSers' Facebooks out there.
  5. Preach a Sermon or Ten Again in 2009 - I don't want to just leave it at one, but I'd love to do this again. I love speaking and for the most part, consider it my top passion. So I'd love to be able to pour into some lives again this year.
So what are your resolutions? Got any sillier or more unique than mine? Let us know so we can all compare notes!

$631 raised so far for Child's Play! I just want to send a quick shout out on my blog for those of you who already donated. Everyone who hasn't (including myself) needs to get on the ball so we can bring the total up, up, up!

Here's the post for more information on how to donate!

Just one more quick note on my blog, we will be posting the nominees and then will be allowing the voting to begin for the end of the year awards later today!

A few notes to help you along:

  • Yes, only one vote per person you fanboys.
  • No, you won't have a clue who is winning thanks to us making the results private until the winners are revealed.
  • Yes, I firmly think the categories and nominees we have this year will create some interesting possibilities as far as results go.
So be ready, expect the polls to be up sometime this afternoon! And one final question, what game do you think should be named game of the year? Be a man and let us all know who you are voting for!

So OS...who is it going to be in the Big XII South? I know we have a ton of lively discussion on the forums about this, but I want to know the pulse of my blog readers! Texas? OU? Tech?

My take? All 3 have a decent argument...honestly none are better than the others and if you think so, you are a fan of said team or you are ignoring reality. If OU was in either Tech's or Texas' position, I'd be screaming trying to state my team's case as well.

In the end, we are going to have three 11-1 teams in the Big XII South, possibly an 11-1 team in the Pac-10, we have an 11-1 team in the Big 10 and then we'll have a worthy 0 or 1 loss team in the SEC as champion (assuming the favorites win there). This is probably the craziest season yet for the BCS.

No more complaining from folks about unrealistic results in NCAA...it seems like the craziest possible scenarios tend to be the actual ones that work themselves out nowadays.
