Fact or Fiction: Mixed Bag Edition

This week on Operation Sports Fact or Fiction, one of our resident Canadians TD St. Matthew-Daniel is set to disagree -- at least we hope -- with old time OS'er Matthew Coe. Both guys will be discussing patches, NHL and NBA 2K10, as well as Ricky Rubio.  Stay tuned for the results after the jump.

#1 Patches have resulted in developers growing lazy since they have become part of the development cycle on consoles.

TD St. Matthew-Daniel:
Fiction – Although it can be argued either way, I don’t believe patches have allowed developers to be lazy. What patches have done is given the developers more flexibility with their product and the ability to try some things. They know if a new feature doesn’t pan out, they can fix it up within a few weeks. Think back to NBA2K9 and the whole 2k Camera fiasco.

Matthew Coe:
Fiction - I do believe some developers now make decisions on issues based on whether or not they can "patch it in" later. The other side of the issue is that we have been able to get a better experience in our games with the ability to download a patch to address issues that are found post release. In the past we've been stuck waiting for next year's game or a community workaround to resolve major flaws.

#2 NHL 2K10 will catch up to NHL 10 in terms of overall game quality.

TD St. Matthew-Daniel:
Fact – Not because 2k Sports is necessarily going to put out a classic hockey game, but NHL 10 has been the king of the rink for a couple of years now. So NHL 2K10 would take advantage of NHL 10 resting on its laurels.

Matthew Coe:
Fiction - NHL 2K is still another year away. The EA NHL series has been on a roll since the '08 game and that enables them to refine and tweak their game. 2K's game is still being built back up from the foundation and still has a lot to prove. 2K's hockey reputation has been damaged in the past few years and they need a very strong showing with NHL 2K10 to regain some of that trust.

#3 NBA 2K10 will be the best sports game released this year.

TD St. Matthew-Daniel: Fact – Being the avid NBA 2K gamer I am, I’ve noticed 2k sports takes two years to produce a quality game with little flaws. There might not be as many new features as they were in NBA2K9, but this year’s version would be more fine-tuned fixing all the minor issues 2K9.

Matthew Coe:
Fiction - I expect the competition from Madden, NBA Live, and FIFA to be much stronger than last year. Having played every 2K basketball game since 2k2 on the Dreamcast, I'm just not sure where Visual Concepts is going to take the game from here. I'm not as excited as I have been in year's past for 2K10. With the major improvements I expect from Madden 10, Live 10, and FIFA 10, not to mention NHL 10, NBA 2K10 won't be able to bring home Sports Game of the Year.

#4 The Minnesota Timberwolves made an incredibly stupid move drafting Ricky Rubio while knowing the cost it would take to bring him there.

TD St. Matthew-Daniel: Fiction – I had tons of debates about this topic and also blogged about it. Whenever you can draft a highly valued player for both basketball and commercial reasons, you HAVE to do it. The dumb move the T-Wolves made was picking another point guard, Johnny Flynn, right after him. Yes, the state of Minnesota isn’t exactly attractive to a young Spanish kid, but they could have done a better job with their second pick. They could have selected a player Rubio would feel more comfortable playing with (Stephen Curry anyone?) not a player he would need to compete with for playing time.

Matthew Coe:
Fact - I was left slack jawed when Minnesota picked PG Rubio at #5 and then PG Flynn at #6. I get the business reasoning behind it and I see the marketing opportunities. But it reminds me of Milwaukee taking Yi Jianlian at #6 in 2007. It just isn't a good fit. Minnesota will end up trading Rubio's rights to another team and not getting fair value for those rights, as other GMs know he isn't thrilled about the possiblility of playing in Minnesota. That said, I wouldn't say it was an incredibly stupid move, just a very short sighted one.

NBA 2k10 wont be the sportsgame of the year..NHL 10 looks amazing...Madden 10 is strong...NBA Live 10 is probably even better than 2k10 and 2k9 wasnt even that good.

FN4 deserves consideration for sports game of the year. Madden, NBA 2K, etc. are all re-hashes of the same game we've been playing for years, just slightly better graphics and minor upgrades in presentation or gameplay. I don't need to play them to know that.

FN4, on the other hand, is a fresh experience. The gameplay is significantly different from any other boxing game past or present, and the simulation aspect is the best ever in a boxing game. Boxershare and some of the online modes like World Championship are great new additions. The 2 year gap between games in the series helps the product seem a lot newer than it probably is, but I'm happy with the result and most who play it will be too. Cannot same the same for Madden.

Sports game of the year will be a tough one but IT WILL NOT BE NBA LIVE until they fix the stiffness of the players I'll stick with 2K. Hopefully Madden will take that crown and finally be worthy OF THE MADDENHOLIDAY!!!!

As far as sports game of the year, don't forget to add The Show into the mix.

Yea, I'd call it a little blasphemes to put NBA Live 10 in contention for "Sports game of the year."

The game definitely looks improved but it’s gonna take more then a year to turn that cluster**** of a series into the overall best sports game. Especially when you consider how good FIFA is and the strong comeback Madden is making.

I don't patches have allowed developers to be lazy, lack of competition does. Patches are a good thing, because the consumer is always gonna catch more than the QA team does. Not only that, but they help with resolving glitch goals and other issues in NHL.

NHL2K10 will definately be better than 2K9 by far I think, but not quite up to par with NHL10, which will be much better than NHL09 as well. I think it has at least one more year, but it should still be a great year for hockey gamers.

NBA2K10 will NOT win Sports Game Of The Year. Too much quality competition.

Logic, it didn't take that long for the NHL series to start racking up awards, so it's entirely possible for the NBA series to.

Sports game of the year should be MLB.

Savoie,

I think the Live series has taken tremendous strides this year but ultimately they would be up against MADDEN 10, FIFA 10, NHL 10 and NBA 2k10.

That doesn’t mean LIVE 10 wont be a good game, it just means that they have a lot of seasoned award winning competition to worry about if they end up being a part of that conversation.

Personally, I think it’s a bit of a stretch to think that a game that has consistently proven itself to be second class in its own sports genre for the last 5 years can magically go from zero to hero in less then a year. Regardless of the new development team and focus on gameplay, less then a year is simply not enough time.

Maybe 2011 but no way NBA Live 10 is bringing home the "Sports Game of the Year." There's a good chance they won’t even be the highest rated basketball game in 2010.

People are mentioning NBA Live in Sports Game of the Year conversations?! It hasn't even been playable the last two years. What about MLB 09: The Show? Skate 2? Fight Night and UFC? A lot of games not even mentioned in this article... NHL 10 and Madden NFL 10 are future games that have a shot, but I think it's MLB's year, and neither of these guys mentions it?

# 11 savoie2006 @ 07/28/09 08:25 PM
No, no, I don't think NBA Live or NBA 2K can win Sports Game Of The Year. I just wouldn't be suprised if it garnered some awards. The NHL series went from NHL 07 to NHL 08 and won what, 9 awards with 08. I think it's entirely possible for Live to do the same.

As for who actually wins Game Of The Year, It will be between Madden, MLB The Show, and NHL, with FIFA being a darkhorse.

# 12 Shinyhubcaps @ 07/28/09 10:49 PM
What other awards are in this mix? Like best franchise, best online modes, etc.? In that case, it may be kind of hard to compare across sports, but you're right, improving games often get the limelight.

I think Madden will take it this year. I have heard a lot of 2K fans that have been getting into how the new Madden looks so it could boost the game this year. I pop in APF2K8 just last night and it was fun but Madden has just amazed me. Especially seeing where it has come from since Madden 08.

That does not mean I will stay away from NHL 10 though. I think both games have hit their stride on next gen. Its hard to take me away from the stong powerful Ducks haha espcially since im a Niners fan in football.

Yes more and more I play it I agree It's MLB The Show '09 I got a PS3 just for it and don't have ANY REGRETS. Best baseball game I've played in years(was being stubborn supporting 2K baseball) I Got Fight Night Round 4 and thats great but the Legacy having to Auto-Train Kills that fun for me. The RTTS and the Batter Pitcher Duels are fun as well as tense GAME OF THE YEAR MLB THE SHOW'09

Madden looks like it will win most the awards this year. However, NHL10 will take home a couple as well. Also even though I hate soccer and can't stand to watch it. Except for that indore soccer where hitting is allowed and there is a ton of scoring. Whatever happened to that? But anyways in saying that I still play FIFA even though I hate soccer. That has to say something for the overall product.

Madden 10 FTW!

# 17 SILK_DA_SHOCKA @ 08/10/09 08:47 PM
